Oasis found in Wellow
‘For God alone my soul waits in silence’. Ps 62:1
‘You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you’. Is 26:3
In our hyper digital, 24/7 consumer culture it feels more important than ever before for us to learn how to be in silence and solitude.
To this end the St J’s Group run two monthly evenings in St Julian’s and St John’s to help people grow in this ancient practice.
“these times are like an oasis for me…”
One attendee says, ‘these times are like an oasis for me. In some ways we can be quite a ‘noisy’ church, and that is no bad thing, but these sessions really equip me for my own times of silence and prayer. In them I learn how to ‘practice the presence of God’ and encounter him in the quiet. It’s been transformative. I have also learned how to meditate on Scripture.
Tom Benyon says, ‘of course, this is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I would say that this is not just for the ‘introverts’ and ‘contemplatives’ - it is for the whole body. Silence and solitude is a key part of our discipleship, and these evenings are about helping us in this area.’
